One of Rome’s most famous landmarks is the Trevi Fountain. This is evidenced by the daily crowd of people flocking around the fountain to take photos and selfies. Romans found a way to create aqueducts and supply the entire city with water. The best way to celebrate their ingenuity and showcase their wealth with water is by building fountains. Rome has a lot of them, over 2000 fountains in fact (Check the list here ). Rome is the city with the most fountains in the world. From that multitude, Trevi stands out as the most significant.
It was built in the 18th century on the site of an existing fountain that was ruined in the 17th century in the Trevi district of Rome. In the competition for the new fountain, Nicola Salvi won in 1732 with his project, but the idea to use the palace wall and to have a triumphal arch in the center was taken from Pietro da Cortona. Salvi is credited with combining allegorical and mythological creatures with parts of natural rocks and stone.
After Salvi’s death, Giuseppe de Pannini further modified the project, and it was finally completed in 1762. It’s no wonder that it took 30 years to finish the fountain considering it is over 26 meters high and 49 meters wide. The grandiose structure is still not large enough for all interested parties to approach the building and take a photo.
According to legend, anyone who throws a metal coin into the fountain will return to Rome. Such a tradition has led to over a million euros ending up in the fountain every year. Numerous attempts to take money from the fountain have been recorded, although it is illegal.
The popularity of the Trevi Fountain is owed to the movie La Dolce Vita, directed by Federico Fellini, in which the famous actress Anita Ekberg enters the fountain with actor Marcello Mastroianni in 1960. In addition to this, there are countless movies in which scenes were filmed at the Trevi Fountain such as Roman Holiday (1953); Three Coins in the Fountain (1954); Sabrina Goes to Rome (1998); and The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003).
The fountain was renovated in 2014 and 2015, and its popularity is multiplied by a multitude of selfies on social media with it in the background.
If you are coming to Rome, a photo in front of the fountain is a must-have, and throwing a coin into the Trevi will ensure that you return to the Eternal City and do it all over again.
